The Author

Josephine Donovan is the author and editor of eleven books, including New England Local Color Literature: A Women's Tradition; After the Fall: The Demeter-Persephone Myth in Wharton, Cather and Glasgow; and Uncle Tom's Cabin: Evil, Affliction, and Redemptive Love. Feminist Theory: The Intellectual Traditions, named an "Outstanding Academic Book" by Choice, is now in its third edition. Her most recent book is Women and the Rise of the Novel, 1405-1726, termed "a work of extraordinary significance" by Choice. Donovan has also published numerous articles on Sarah Orne Jewett and others in such journals as American Literature and Signs. She is Professor of English at the University of Maine.
